Restoration Goals and Challenges

Like most historic restoration projects, there were multiple issues addressed to ensure the success of this project. The project had window system leaks on both floors of the solarium, and it is our responsibility as stewards of our work to find the source(s) of a problem and determine if there were additional factors hindering performance of the windows. Investigating all components related to the window leaks led to exterior cast terracotta repair, including copper flashing, restructuring of cast iron supports, and even the repair of fractured structural limestone components. It is vital that the final outcome is not only complete, but to ensure all additional building component-related repairs are fully operational and functional for the foreseeable future.

Key Highlights

Harmoniously incorporating yesteryear woodworking techniques with traditional metals, modern color-matched stone epoxy, and re-use of cylinder glass with a mixture of linseed oil-based glazing and polyurethane sealants to achieve the highest standard of repair for generations to view.
